Preface

Uncertainty analysis in CFD is a controversial subject. There are various opinions about how to deal with it and about the suitability or adequacy of procedures. Even semantic problems have not all been settled. The distinction between Validation (“solving the right equations”) and Verification (“solving the equations right”) is now widely recognized and accepted. But, for example, whether uncertainty quantification and error estimation are the same thing or not is still under debate.

This workshop is meant to bring people together who are concerned about the confidence in the reliability of their computational results and are prepared to make an effort to establish an error band for the results of two test cases, adopted form the ERCOFTAC database. We are very happy to have found Patrick Roache prepared to present an invited lecture and to lead the discussions during the workshop.

We sincerely hope that the workshop will stimulate discussions on the subject of CFD uncertainty analysis and broaden the awareness of the problems that still have to be solved. At least we hope that at the end of the workshop all participants will have a fair idea of the uncertainty in their results for the two flow problems.
